The 14th century
gatehouse of Limeuil on the border of the upper village and the lower village protected inhabitants of the upper village against attacks. Originally this hous had heavy wooden doors to ensure protection. The house was probably destroyed during the Hunderd Years War of the 15th century.
The semi-circular arch of the gatehouse as well as the first window above, as well as the roof, certainly date from the 18th century.

Some information,
Limeuil is one of the "Les Plus Beaux Villages de France" (I thought only 9 villages are selected as so in the Dordogne).
The Vézère joins the Dordogne in Limeuil and because so the village was an important trading village before the railways existed. The village was destroyed by Vikings and during the 100-year war (15th C). It is now a popular holiday area.
The house was owned for many years by a family from Paris before a couple from Bordeaux bought it (from whom I bought it).
I bought the house with the idea creating an antique store in it (afterall I am an antique dealer) but beside of the holidays it is very calm in Limeuil and therefore the house does not forfill my professional ambition. Today the house is fully equiped (even with beds and accessoiries) and it is rent out on a short-term base / month to month.
Please do not hesitate me if you would like to visit the house.
